වට්ටගාමිණී අභය හෙවත් වළගම්බා රජු කල ඇති වූ චෝළ ආක්‍රමණයක් නිසා රජු මාළිගය අතහැර පලා යන විට ගිරි නම් මහා කළු සිංහලයා පලා යන්නේ ය කියා කෑ ගසා ඇත. වළගම්බා රජු පලා ගොස් සැඟව කුපික්කලතිස්ස නම් තෙරුන්ගේ අනුශාසනා හා සහය ඇතිව සේනා සංවිධානය කොට චෝළයන් පළවා රට එක්සේසත් කළේ ය.
ඉන්පසු නිඝණ්ඨාශ්‍රමය විනාශ කොට එහි අභයගිරිය ඉදිකළ බව සඳහන් ය. තම නාමයේ කොටසක් වූ අභය හා ගිරි නිඝණ්ඨයාගේ නාමය එකතු කොට මෙය අභයගිරිය ලෙස නම් කළේ ය.
රජු විසින් තමාට නොමද සහයක් ලබාදුන් කුපික්කලතිස්ස තෙරුන්ට අභයගිරිය පූජා කළ අතර එම ආරාම පූජාව පුද්ගලිකව පිළිගත් බැවින් මහාවිහාර හා අභයගිරි භික්ෂූන් අතර විනය ප්‍රශ්නයක් ඇති විය.එය හේතුවෙන් ලක්දිව ප්‍රථම වරට නිකාය භේදය ඇති විය.
අභයගිරි චෛත්‍යෛයේ මුළු උස අඩි 245 ක් ද පාදමෙහි විෂ්කම්භය
අඩි 307 ක් ද වේ. චෛත්‍ය අභ්‍යන්තරයේ රන් වෘෂභ රුවක් තුළ සර්වඥ ධාතුන් වහන්සේලා
තැන්පත් කර ඇති බව සඳහන් වේ. උත්තර චෛත්‍ය, අභාගිරි හා භයාගිරි යන නම් වලින් ද හඳුන්වන
මෙම ථූපය හෙළදිව සුවිසල් ථූප අතරින් එකකි.
When the king "Vattagamini Abhaya" alias "Walagamba" fled the palace due to a Chola invasion, a monk("Niganta") named Giri was shouting that the great black Sinhalese would run away. King Walagamba fled and hid. Then he trained the forces with the help of the Thera Kupikkalathissa and kicked out "Chola" s and united the country.
It is said that the Abhayagiri was built after the destruction of the ascetic of "Niganta" by king "Walagamba" . He named it "Abhayagiri" ,by taking his name "Abhaya" and the name of that "Niganta" , "Giri" .
The King offered Abhayagiriya to the Thera Kupikalathissa who had given him a great support. The Mahavihara and the Abhayagiri monks caused a disciplinary dispute due to the private welcome of Abayagiriya by Thera Kupikalathissa.
The total height of the Abhayagiri Stupa is 245 feet and the base is 307 feet in diameter. It is said that the relics are placed in a golden sculpture inside the stupa. This stupa, also known as 'Uththara Chaitya', 'Aabhairi' and 'Bhayagiri' is one of the great stupas of Hela Diva.
